Supporting the Stumping Project in Ethiopia

3rd July 2024

In Ethiopia, many coffee trees are old and under‑productive. The most effective way to restore them is through a process called stumping — cutting the tree back to around 30cm so it can regrow stronger, healthier stems. It sounds drastic, but it works. Stumped trees produce higher yields and better‑quality cherries, which can transform a farmer’s income.

The challenge is that stumping comes with a short‑term cost: farmers lose around 1.5 years of harvest while the new stems grow. For smallholder farmers already living on tight margins, that temporary loss of income can feel impossible to absorb — even though the long‑term benefits are huge.

A pilot project in Sidamo, Ethiopia, showed just how powerful stumping can be when farmers are supported through that difficult period. Over three years, the results were remarkable:

  • After one harvest without production, stumped trees returned to 70% of their original yield in year two.
  • By year three, they produced two to four times more cherries — and continued to do so for at least six years.

This is why the Stumping Project matters. With the right support, farmers can rejuvenate their trees, increase productivity, and build a more secure future for their families. It’s a practical, proven way to strengthen Ethiopia’s coffee supply while helping communities lift themselves out of poverty.

We’re honoured to play a small part in this work — and grateful to everyone who enjoys our coffee, because your support helps make projects like this possible.

  • Tall tree with thick trunk and branches in a forest setting

    Step 1

Select old trees that require stumping. No more than a 1/4 of a farm.

  • Person working with a tool on a tree in a forest setting

    Step 2

Cut at a height of 30cm from the ground, at an angle of 45° from the stump

  • Young trees in a field with mulch and clear sky

    Step 3

Select the best 3 suckers to become the new main stems. (20 - 30 cm high)

  • Man sitting under a coffee tree in a forested area

    Step 4

After 18 months, the new main stems will start to produce cherries.

We’re proud to be supporting The Stumping Project, a three‑year initiative led by Falcon Coffees and TechnoServe, designed to help Ethiopian coffee farmers earn a sustainable living by rejuvenating their coffee trees.
