Moka Pot Brewing Guide

Strong, aromatic, and nostalgic - the stovetop classic with real character.

The Moka Pot is beloved for it's rich, espresso-like coffee and its timeless ritual. It's simple, sturdy, and perfect for anyone who enjoys a bold, full-bodied cup without the complexity of an espresso machine.

This guide gives you a clean, balanced brew while avoiding the bitterness that often comes from overheating.

Step-by-step instructions

What you'll need

  • Moka pot (any size)
  • Burr grinder (if purchasing beans)
  • Freshly roasted Golden Sheep Coffee beans (or pre-ground)
  • Kettle
  • Scales
  • Clean, filtered water

Recommended Recipe

  • Coffee: Fill the basket level (no tamping)
  • Grind: Medium fine (finer than filter, coarser than espresso)
  • Water: Fill the bottom chamber to just below the valve
  • Time: approx. 4–5 minutes

This method keeps the brew smooth and avoids the harshness that comes from boiling.

Step 1 - Pre-heat your water

  • Heat water in a kettle until hot but not boiling
  • Using pre-heated water reduces the time the coffee spends on the stove, preventing bitterness.

Step 2 - Fill the bottom chamber

Pour the hot water into the base up to (but never above) the safety valve.

Step 3 - Add your coffee

  • Fill the filter basket with ground coffee and level it off with your finger.
  • Do not tamp - the Moka Pot needs airflow.

Step 4 - Assemble carefully

  • Use a cloth or oven glove to hold the hot base.
  • Replace the coffee-filled filter basket.
  • Screw the top on firmly but without over-tightening.

Step 5 - Brew on medium heat

  • Place the pot on the stove over a medium heat.
  • The coffee will begin to rise slowly into the upper chamber

Step 6 - Remove from heat early

  • When the steam turns pale or starts to sputter, remove the pot from the heat immediately.
  • This prevents over extraction.

Step 7 - Cool the base

  • Run the bottom chamber under cold water for a few seconds.
  • This stops the brewing process and keeps the flavour clean.

Step 8 - Serve and adjust

  • Too bitter: grind coarser or reduce heat.
  • Too weak: grind finer or increase dose slightly.
  • Metallic taste: ensure the pot is fully dry before storing.

Tips for better Moka Pot coffee

  • Use filtered water for a sweeter, cleaner cup.
  • Keep your Moka Pot clean - oils build up quickly.
  • Avoid high heat; slow brewing gives the best flavour.
  • For a smoother cup, stir the coffee in the top chamber before serving.

Our recommendation

The Moka pot highlights chocolate, caramel, and nutty notes beautifully. Our Golden Sheep House Blend is a natural fit, but richer single origins also shine in this method.
